SANTA CRUZ FARM

I am very proud to be a woman who produces specialty coffees.

My name is Jessica, I am a small specialty coffee producer. I am 33 years old and have been married for 15 years, my husband’s name is Tiago. We have an 8-year-old daughter, Amanda.

I’m from the city of Lambari. I am the 4th generation coffee grower in my family. My great-grandfather Sebastião Fernandes was one of the first coffee growers in our municipality. At that time, even without education and with little knowledge, he was already a connoisseur of quality coffees.

My father says that he ordered his employees to pick the yellow variety of coffee and he could only pick the trees that were very ripe, he dried them separately and roasted them for consumption. People at the time laughed at him, little did they know that he was the one who was right.

This passion of mine for coffees and especially high quality coffees is a family property.

I grew up in the coffee plantation helping my parents, always with a lot of love. I loved going to the coffee shop both at harvest time and in other coffee jobs. When I got married my husband and I started our plantation, he had inherited a piece of land, so we started to plant our coffee. This was in 2006. We both did the work all by ourselves and slowly we formed our crops.

In 2019 I joined the AMECAFÉ Association, it was there with the exchange of experiences with other producers that I ate taking courses and seeking more knowledge to dedicate myself to the cultivation of specialty coffees. Before, we already produced a few batches of specialty coffee, but now our production is around 80% specialty coffee. And with a lot of work and a lot of dedication and love, we are getting great coffees.

It was not easy to get here, but when we love our work, we go beyond the criteria that appear. We still have a long way to go, as we come from a humble family, we don’t have anything very modern to help us prepare these coffees, but slowly we are managing to improve our infrastructure.

I found in the production of specialty coffees the opportunity to give my family a better life. My dream is to be able to give my daughter a good education, because my husband and I couldn’t have it. I want her to study a lot and help us here on our farm so that we can have the 5th generation of coffee growers in the family, I want her to follow in our steps, but bringing more knowledge to improve even more.
